It’s coming! After years of speculation and many many memes, it has returned. On June the 10th during Microsoft’s 2018 E3 press briefing, a great gift was given to us. You guessed it, Battletoads!
In 2019 Dlala Studios will be stoking the Toad loving flame that has kept gamers like me going all of these years. Featuring Body Morphing Genre Mash-ups, 3 Player Couch Co-op and 4K Hand-Drawn 2.5D Graphics the hype train is a-rolling. I for one will be calling up every Gamestop and Wal-Mart I know to get myself a sweet pre-order.
If you have not understood any of my references today first of all I apologise. Secondly here this video from one of my favourite YouTube channels, The Internet Historian will help.
For a little background to this mess, Battletoads is a classic game released in 1991 by Rare for the NES. The side scrolling beat-em-up/platformer masterpiece put players in the shoes of three Space Humanoid Toad Warriors hell bent on rescuing Princess Angelica from the evil Dark Queen. The game was lauded for its story, gameplay and graphics but was also criticised for its insane difficulty, especially on how quickly this difficulty spiked. I for one am hoping that this difficulty remains, including some semblance of the infamous Turbo Tunnel level!
This is not to say that this reveal is a surprise however! There has been constant rumblings of a Battletoads reboot for some time now. In 2015 Phil Spencer, Microsoft’s Gaming Head was seen on stage, wearing a Battletoads shirt, hinting of an incoming reboot. Not just that but the warrior amphibians have made some interesting cameos in recent years, most notably Shovel Knight and Killer Instinct. All of these have been keeping the Toad fires burning.
Taking the reins of this re-imagining of a classic is the relative newcomers Dlala Studios. Like Rare, Dlala are a UK based team who have released two games to date and have a third coming.
The trailer for this upcoming and hopeful new classic can be found here.
Battletoads has been slated for 2019 on Xbox One and Windows 10.
