Megaton: The designer of the PlayStation 5, Mark Cerny, in an interview with Wired.com, shared Sony’s next-generation plans today. Everything from the basic hardware, software template, customizations, and backwards compatibility were highlighted. Here’s the scoop.

PlayStation 5 will feature:

  • An 8 Core AMD Ryzen 2 CPU on a 7nm process
  • A modified Next Generation AMD Navi powered GPU
  •  Custom SSD / HD storage that is said to be faster than anything available today
  • Ray tracing support
  • An Audio Unit designed around next-generation 3D Audio
  •  An entirely new VR Platform with support for existing PS4 PSVR headset owners
  •  Backwards compatiblity with PS4 software
  • A pledge to support Physical Media
  • 2020 launch date

As you can see this is a very capable and powerful machine. The article went onto further mention Spider-Man as a demonstration of the next generation SSD performance where an entire level that took a PS4 Pro 15 seconds to load – finished in only 0.8 seconds on the PS5. This is nothing short of a game changer. The end of load times as we know it.

Lastly, the article goes on to hint that there will be a soft launch period of software that is simultanous on both PS4 and PS5. The author makes a suggestion that Death Stranding could potentially be cross platform on both PS4 and PS5.

So there you have it. No more rumors, speculation, or insiders. These are the cold hard facts. One thing is for certain- the PS5 is looking to usher in a new era with hardware that would make PC owners blush. Everything we are hearing sounds incredible.
